Father Sexually Assaulted 3YO Daughter | When Arrested, He Claimed He Had Mistaken His Toddler For His Wife

It did not take the jury more than thirty minutes to give their verdict against Henry Vincent Bennett.

Trigger warning: This story contains details of child abuse and incest abuse that some readers may find disturbing.

Henry Vincent Bennett from West Virginia had been performing sexual acts on his toddler. On February 2018, he was arrested after his 3-year-old daughter gave hints to the family members and child safety officers that she was being abused. According to Daily Mail, there were instances where the little girl would make a phallic shape out of Play-Doh saying it was her father's "butt." Child advocacy worker Cindy Lambert revealed a heartbreaking conversation where the child mentioned her father putting his "butt on her butt."

When Henry was brought in by the police and questioned about these allegations, he denied having performed any sexual act on his little girl. But eventually, he confessed that he had, in fact, indulged in the heinous crime on two occasions. One of them involved oral sex, while another involved a sex toy. What was more shocking than these revelations was the fact that he defended himself saying both times, he mistook his 30-pound child to be his wife, an adult woman.

Describing his horrendous actions, Henry explained how he "accidentally" used the sex toy on his daughter one time when his child allegedly crawled into the bed while his wife went to the bathroom.

When the sick man tried to weasel his way out of such a horrendous and beyond-imaginable crime by providing the most ridiculous reason, the court didn't waste any time before handing him a strict sentence.

Although the pervert tried to escape consequences by stating in the court in Bluefield that his earlier confession to the police was false and a result of being pressurized by the cops.

While being cross-examined by prosecuting Attorney George Sitler, Henry was asked, "You thought making up a story would give you can chance to go home? Why did you do it?" according to Bluefield Daily Telegraph. To this, Henry responded, "Because I was scared." Sitler then gestured towards a table with several sex toys and even pointed at the one Henry had confessed to having used during one of his acts. He was then grilled by the attorney who asked him how he could possibly have mistaken the little child's 30-pound body to be that of his adult wife's, who weighed 185 pounds.

"I was laying on my back," Henry said. "I thought it was April (wife), and when I rolled over (child) yelled." This left the courtroom shocked with disgust as Henry was repeating the confession he had given to the police. Hoping to get a lighter sentence for his client, Earl Hager, the defense attorney of Henry, argued on the basis of mental incapacity. "Henry Bennett is a child living in an adult’s body, so he made up a lie so he could go home. However, within 30 minutes of the session, the jury found Henry guilty of two charges of first-degree sexual assault, two charges of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian and two charges of incest.

Recalling the moment Henry repeated his own confession while attempting to prove that it was false, prosecutor Sitler told WVVA, "It's a TV moment. It's a thing that happens on crime shows like Perry Mason. You wait your whole career to get somebody to actually confess to what they're accused of on the stand, and this is the first time I've ever seen it happen." In March last year, the father was sentenced to a term of 25 to 100 years in prison.

Denying the motion for a new trial, the Circuit Court Judge Derek Swope cited that the young child might be subjected to sufferings later in life, according to Bluefield Daily Telegraph. "I’m not locking him up for the rest of his life, but for the rest of his effective life," Swope said. In addition to the man, who was 26 at the time he was charged, his 24-year-old wife, too, was taken into custody for being an accessory to her husband's crime. Eventually, she took a deal and went on to plead guilty of child neglect.
