The mother died while giving birth to their fourth child, a baby boy that they were looking forward to raising together.
Lauren and Matt Accurso were high school sweethearts who wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, raising a beautiful family. After having three beautiful girls, Lauren was pregnant a fourth time with a baby boy! The couple was ecstatic about completing their family and were eagerly looking forward to meeting their son. “There was so much excitement because, after three girls, they were having a boy,” said the couple’s pastor, Matt McCloghry. Tragedy struck when Lauren was about to give birth; their dreams came to an abrupt end as she died due to complications while giving birth to their son, according to Today.
Just like that, 20 beautiful years of love, friendship, and family came to a standstill for Matt and his girls, Ali Rose, Naomi Belle, and Layne Louise. But there was nothing that could have prevented what happened during baby Matthew's birth. "Our dear Lauren has gone home to be with Jesus. There are no words to describe the pain and heartbreak felt by so many." said the grieving family's GoFundMe page. "Lauren passed away while in childbirth from what has been determined so far to be an unpreventable and very rare medical emergency."
Matt, while grieving the loss of the love of his life, also struggled to come to terms with the fact that their beloved son might just not make it. Because of the complications from the birth, baby Matthew suffered a significant amount of brain injury, and his tiny body was struggling with cognitive function and development. "Upon hearing this news, My first reaction as Matthew's daddy was to sweep my sweet boy up and carry him as far away from machines, medications, life support, and hospital smells as I could," Matt said.
"I wanted to whisk him away to our family condo on the beach and let the healing kisses of his sisters, grandmas, and cousins cleanse his little body of all his infirmities, but as life sometimes does, I was brought back down to the reality that my only son, the sweet boy that my wife so diligently and lovingly carried for 9 months is in a situation that daddy could not fix." Matt tried to hold on to every last bit of hope he had while he sat beside his son, entangled in a bunch of tubes. "The ONLY hope in all of this could only come from his heavenly daddy who placed breathe in Matthews's lungs from the very beginning," the heartbroken father said.
Matt was, at the time, hoping for a miracle. It was bad enough that he had to lose his beloved wife; he didn't want to lose his son, too. "Some will hear our story and think, what an awful tragedy. Some will think, where is God when we need him? Some will say, see, miracles don’t happen. But do you want the truth? Matthew is a living miracle," Matt said. He firmly believes that his son was a "living miracle" who was born into the chaos of doctors trying to save his mother's life and his own life.
For a minute, it seemed like God had actually heard his prayers because little Matthew's condition seemed to be improving. "Matthew then defied all odds and opened his eyes, breathed on his own, pumped blood through his strong heart, moved his limbs without rigidity and even made coo noises," Matt said. His body slowly began to function, and he even gripped my finger when from what we were told, that should have been impossible."
"They really feel like they have been able to hold onto a miracle, and baby Matthew is a miracle," pastor McCloghry said, as per TODAY. "They are really seeing this from heaven's perspective. The name Matthew means 'gift of God.' They are choosing to see him as a true gift." Things still took a turn for the worse; Matt had to watch his newborn son depart too. But, he still believes that it was all a miracle, and he chooses only to focus on the memories that will last a lifetime.
"My miracle was having my soul mate by my side for almost 20 years and then being so blessed to give her 4 gorgeous babies," Matt said. "My miracle is holding my son for as many precious moments as possible and when the time comes, lifting him up to his mommy so that she can hold him for the first time in paradise." Even though they had just a couple weeks, Matt and his girls made sure to spend every moment with Matthew and to shower him with all the love and affection in the world. Matt made sure that they "see Matthew off to his mommy and Heavenly Father" in the right way.
